The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project

Category: Amazing Pictures Comments: No comments

We’ve already shared some pictures of this gorgeous mosaic staircase on our facebook page two weeks ago, and I’ve almost forgot to post it here on our website.

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project has been a neighborhood effort to create a beautiful mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps located at 16th and Moraga in San Francisco. Sponsored by the San Francisco Parks Trust, artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher started working on the project in January of 2003. The mosaic staircase was completed on August 18, 2004 with the help of over 300 neighbors, and over 220 neighbors who sponsored handmade animal, bird and fish name tiles.

As you can see, the result is simply amazing! The beautiful pictures below were taken by various flickr users.

Amazing Body Art

Category: Amazing Pictures Comments: No comments

Japanese art student Chooo-San, aged 19, uses only acrylic paint and her incredible talent to transform herself into a mutant or cyborg. Multiple mouths, six eyes or even batteries protruding from her forearms – these are just a few examples of what she can do with a human body.

Everything began when Chooo-San was studying for university admission exams. She would draw eyes and other objects on her hands while taking breaks from her studies.

Finally, she took her hobby a step further and created a portfolio of her realistic body paintings. The results look incredibly promising and reminds me of Creepily Realistic Tattoos by Yomico Moreno. Chooo-San is on a good track, and I’m pretty sure we’ll see her on Bored Panda again.

Human Hair Necklaces by Kerry Howley

Category: Amazing Pictures Comments: No comments

“Attraction/Aversion” is Kerry Howley’s award winning graduate collection, winning the Museum of Domestic Architecture’s Arthur Silver Award for graduate innovation and excellence. It is a material exploration of how people can feel seemingly opposing emotional responses simultaneously.

The necklaces are made of human hair, a familiar material that we take pride in. However once off of the body hair becomes an innate source of aversion. Kerry wanted to see if she could make discarded hair attractive again.

Through the familiar form of a necklace, and using patterns and symmetry that are instinctively pleasing, Kerry has created a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of aversion and attraction.

ShopIncredible Water Splash Flowers by Jack Long

Category: Amazing Pictures Comments: No comments

Milwaukee-based photographer Jack Long creates gorgeous water splash flowers that last only a fraction of a second and you won’t find them in any flower store!

The artist shapes and colors the liquid flowers by using a mixture of water, thickener, pigment and dye. Unbelievably, every shot from the “Vessels and Blooms” series is captured in one high speed exposure, without any Photoshop.

“Wanted to advance my fluid suspension/high speed photography to a higher level. I created the liquid Vase in the autumn of 2011. I worked on creating the floral forms and leaves through the winter and put it all together Spring 2012. All of my images, unless otherwise noted are single capture events. I do not use photoshop to create composited images...

New Carved Book Landscapes by Guy Laramee

Category: Amazing Pictures Comments: No comments

Canadian artist Guy Laramee has recently published a new series of his amazing book landscapes which are made by carving old books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. He calls his new project “Guan Yin” and dedicates it “to the mysterious forces thanks to which we can traverse ordeals”.

“My mother died in 2011. I was with her when she took her last breath. In fact there was no last breath. Each breath grew smaller and smaller. I took her pulse when it appeared that there would not be another breath. I like to think that there was one last tiny heart beat, but in fact there was no end. Only a growing silence which continues now.

Everything we know, everything we did, everything we think we are, everything and everyone we love, all this will be wiped out...
